NOTES | Encephalartos
altensteinii, distinguishes itself from other large green South African
species by its straight leaves, broad, well-spaced leaflets with very few
spines at maturity, and its basal leaflets do not reduce to spines. The
species name altensteinii commemorates Altenstein, a 19th-century German
chancellor and patron of science. |
GEOGRAPHIC REGION | Endemic to South Africa |
NATIVE HABITAT | Found in coastal
areas including open scrub, steep rocky slopes, evergreen forests in valleys
and river banks. It also occurs inland at a higher altitude in isolated
sites. |
